Borgarfjordur Saga Circle

Borgarfjordur area in West Iceland offers diverse nature, beautiful landscapes as well as sagas, culture and cuisine all over the area. After picking you up in Reykjavík (or surrounding area) we start by driving along Hvalfjordur, a scenic fjord formed by glaciers and external forces.

We continue our trip to Skorradalur, a 28 km long forested valley with a beautiful lake alongside. Furthermore, we continue to Reykholt one of the strongholds of Icelandic sagas. The distinguished saga writer Snorri Sturluson lived, worked and died there in the 13th century and some fine pieces of Icelandic medieval literature originated there.

On our way we visit Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. It provides 180 l/sec of 100°C hot water. Most of the water used for central heating in the towns of Borgarnes and Akranes is taken from Deildartunguhver. If you take a shower anywhere within a 65 km radius of the spring, you have already bathed in the hot water from this powerful spring!

On our way back to Reykjavík, we will visit one of our favourite spots in Bogarfjörður: Hraunfossar waterfall and Barnafossar. Hraunfossar, or Lava waterfalls, can be described as a collection of countless creeks and cascades streaming out of the lava. Whether it is winter or summer, autumn or spring, this area is an impressive scene for enjoying or photographing.

West Iceland is one of Iceland´s hidden treasures, right at the doorstep of the capital. This is a captivating region where glaciers, waterfalls and lava-fields catch the eye. Cave exploring, visiting hot springs, hiking or relaxing in one of the swimming pools are among the options for travelers in the area. Borgarfjörður is also rich with history since many of the most famous settlers and Vikings lived and died there.
